I am in a sulk. A flip of a coin decided it. Little friend demanded
battlefields and castles; I wanted a riverside town, literarily inspired —
even if there is insufficient time to enjoy the complete works, as it were.
Thus friend is feeling rather smug as we arrive at the site of a battle
fought in August 1265. Here, a prince (later king) defeated an earl. He was
buried in the abbey church in the town to the south.
“You really want to see another battlefield?” I ask, as we return to the
car. “Aren’t they all the same?” Yes, please, is the inevitable response. So
it is that I motor east, secretly plotting to take a “convenient” wrong turn
towards the literary town. However, I had not bargained for friend’s
map-reading prowess: any attempt to deviate is soon nipped in the bud. Thus,
24 miles later, we arrive at the second battlefield, where we park close to
the top of a scarp, some 600ft above sea level. The battle was fought on the
plain below. Hoping a certain somebody might get bored, I try a history
lesson. (Date: October 23; earl v king; earl’s father: Robert; king’s
father: James; no outright winner.) Sadly, friend’s boredom threshold is
rather high — so we spend an eternity here before entering castle mode.
Cheerfully, friend directs me north-northwest. Through there, to the right,
the village where a saint was born circa 1012 (his day: January 19). A
little beyond, the outskirts of a town — of royal status since 1838. At
least it has some literary interest, I mutter to myself: Mr Dombey met Mrs
Skewton there. Another town adjoins immediately to the west, and it is here
that we explore every last nook of the 14th-century castle.
When, shadows lengthening, we return to the car, our day is almost
complete — but not before I take some pictures of local canals for my
collection. One is seven miles to the west; at 25½ miles long, it passes
through a town whose name it takes — the literary town I wanted to visit.
But first we drive three miles to another canal and the Stairway to Heaven —
a remarkable series of locks. “Is it deep? How many are there?”
(Twenty-one). “Why’s it called the Stairway to Heaven?”
Oh, please, don’t tempt me.
The questions
1 Which literary town did I wish to visit?
2 Where was the second battle fought?
