What were marshes, hills and estuaries to Victorian railway engineers?
Merely minor inconveniences — invariably conquered with panache and a
soupçon of derring-do.
I arrive at a station four miles west-southwest of the traditional burial
place of a 6th-century poet. (Whether he even existed is debatable, but
tradition says
he was found by Elphin, who was subsequently blessed with remarkably good
fortune.) The height of summer it may be, but a rascally breeze means I am
quite relieved to board the train, which then trundles north. Two miles
later, the line turns northeast along an estuary’s south bank, where I
relish that certain feeling of satisfaction that arises when you pass
through countryside no car can reach.
The line follows the estuary until, 12 minutes into my journey, I change
trains at a junction station bearing the river’s name. The railway crosses
it here, cocking a snook at motorists, who cannot cross for a further 5½
miles. My connection arrives, and immediately takes me across the boundary
of a national park that hugs the estuary’s northern shore.
Twelve minutes from the junction, the train squeaks to a halt in a town that
has a folk song named after it. Legend says that this was the land of
Lowland Hundred — until it was drowned by the sea. Some say its church bells
still chime from beneath the waves, but I hear nothing save the excited
chatter of children boarding. With a lurch, we set off, through the home
town of a little railway first opened to passengers in 1866, now joined by a
road, where we gently race a bright-blue sports car — with which we only
part company as we halt at a tiny station (the fourth after I changed
trains). Beyond, the line gradually turns northeast, nudged ever closer to
the sea by the looming contours to our right.
Some 22 rail miles from the junction, we leave the national park and
approach a second river. Here, the railway non-chalantly crosses the estuary
via the country’s longest rail viaduct to bring me to journey’s end: a town.
Motorists, however, face a 14-mile drive to achieve the same. I cannot help
feeling those
Victorian engineers will be joining me in a silent, yet smug, snigger.
The questions
1 What is the name of the junction station?
2 In which town did my journey end?
Click the button above to submit your entry or send your answers on a
postcard to Where Was I? August 21, 2005, PO Box 5078, Leighton Buzzard LU95
1AE, by Wednesday. The winner will be announced next week. Only one entry
per household. Normal Times Newspapers rules apply. No correspondence will
be entered into.
